Give Yourself a Job
Creating income-generating opportunities

THE NEED
Hundreds of thousands of South Africans are desperate to make a living. It has been accepted that neither the corporates nor government can meet this need.

THE PROGRAMME
”Give Yourself a Job” is an effective, easy to implement and low-cost process that teaches people to identify, access and implement income-generating opportunities for themselves.

The programme, which draws on our collective 50 years’ experience in small business development and education, combines simple, accessible learning materials with the resources of civil society institutions (churches, associations, unions and businesses).

The programme is built around a 150 page A4 participant workbook that participants can work through with friends or family. In many areas an “Opportunity Coach” – a volunteer either from civil society institutions or from business/NGO – will be available to assist.

The role players are:

Participants/beneficiaries

Motivated by a need to earn or supplement an income.
  • Principally working class/aspirant middle class, urban & rural.
  • Higher socio-economic not excluded.
  • Basic functional numeracy and literacy (or access to ‘reader’).
Opportunity coaches

Motivated to make a sustained and meaningful contribution to7 individuals and society. Personal development and growth.
  • Strong desire to help others.
  • Willingness to develop capacity to fulfil coach role.

  2. The skills and insights will be of value to you in your work and personal life.
  3. The programme is in itself an energising and rewarding experience.
  4. There is always the opportunity to build your own network.

The programme is consistent with Bobby Godsell and James Motlatsi’s recently published “DO IT”

THE OUTCOMES

  • Enables them to link their abilities with these opportunities
